Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
