Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Widespread Heatwave Warnings Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of properties and loss of life. Severe heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure moves eastward, delivering blazing heat to much of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures creates a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

Global Climatic Events Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into darkness recently after powerful winds compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is anticipated to create further issues as utility companies scramble to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Fog Blankets Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a region known for its sunny weather and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on record. A particular form of fog, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by unprecedented fall rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination

Turning to Spain, a powerful storm has brought heavy rain, powerful gales and even snow to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at higher ground, the storm brought some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snow, strong winds from the north buffeted the archipelago, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on several islands. The influence of the storm is forecast to ease this week with more typical conditions taking hold.
