Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have previous links to the club - are among the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton head coach - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the club directors as they begin the process of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
