A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who fled subsequent to the incident was found shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
