Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Chief Executive Steps Down Following Pivot Into Chicken.
The chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the company into poultry items has been replaced after disagreements with its directors.
Executive Shake-Up
Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for more than two decades, had sought to shift the UK's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, stating in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the most rapidly expanding protein in the world.
Board Tensions
It is understood that there was tension between Rennie and the governance team over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
New Product Launch
In the autumn, Domino's launched its poultry offering – which Rennie called a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.
While the company is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as complementary to its core pizza business.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and profitability in our primary operations. We are focused on finding the ideal CEO to lead the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Market Difficulties
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said transactions declined by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it attributed reduced spending in the period before the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a significant fall in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also struggling. Another major chain revealed the closing of 68 restaurants a recently, after the company behind its British operations fell into administration.
Wellness Efforts
Adapting to customer preferences towards better nutrition, Domino's has introduced lower-calorie options, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 calories as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a personal has 909 kcal.
Acting Management
Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and was formerly with the gambling company a well-known operator. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the top job permanently.
Frampton stated: “We have a multiple current growth and operational projects that we will be dedicated to executing at speed.”
Frampton noted these comprised ongoing development on the company's supply chain and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also lacking a full-time CFO until the spring, when Andrea starts from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow acts as acting financial officer.
