The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
