The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Allegations

Courtroom Case
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, accused the drug companies of withholding the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the producers of Tylenol, claiming the companies hid potential risks that the medication presented to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action comes four weeks after Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between taking acetaminophen - referred to as acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which previously sold the drug, the sole analgesic suggested for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a declaration, he stated they "misled consumers by gaining financially from discomfort and pushing pills ignoring the dangers."

Kenvue asserts there is insufficient reliable data linking Tylenol to autism.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, knowingly endangering millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

The manufacturer commented that it was "seriously troubled by the perpetuation of misinformation on the reliability of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its official site, the company also said it had "continuously evaluated the pertinent research and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a verified association between using paracetamol and autism."

Associations representing physicians and healthcare providers share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for pregnant women to address discomfort and elevated temperature, which can create serious health risks if ignored.

"In over twenty years of research on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the usage of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation results in neurological conditions in young ones," the association said.

The lawsuit references current declarations from the Trump administration in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump raised alarms from medical authorities when he told women during pregnancy to "resist strongly" not to use acetaminophen when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the consumption of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in minors has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who oversees the FDA, had vowed in April to undertake "comprehensive study program" that would identify the source of autism in a short period.

But authorities cautioned that finding a single cause of autism - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a intricate combination of genetic and surrounding conditions - would prove challenging.

Autism is a category of lifelong neurodivergence and condition that impacts how individuals encounter and engage with the surroundings, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - asserts the manufacturer and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the firms "remove any commercial messaging" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for women during pregnancy.

This legal action parallels the grievances of a collection of parents of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol in recently.

Judicial authorities dismissed the legal action, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
